With more than 80,000 titles at your fingertips, The Edmonton Book Store near Whyte Avenue is a rare find when you're looking for a great read. Barb Ellis bought the store in 1992 and has decades of experience finding rare and out-of-print books for collectors and book lovers of all ages.
“What I love is connecting the right book with the right person,” says Barb. “Often people find books from their childhood they thought they would never find again or something extremely specialized that people had given up hope of ever finding. Through our ability to shop worldwide, there is no limit to what we can find.”
The quiet little shop with shelves full of books is a browser's delight. “There’s always classical or jazz music playing. It is a warm and respectful atmosphere I think a lot of people enjoy,” says Barb. “We do try to have something fresh every day. We buy thousands of books every month so we always have new material.”

I was charmed by this used bookstore the moment I walked in. The floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelves twist and turn, creating quiet nooks and crannies perfect for reading. The Edmonton Bookstore specializes in second-hand and out-of-print books on Western Canada, world history, military, philosophy and literature, and they’ve also catalogued all of their volumes online.
