When Rahul Varma came to Canada from India in 1976, he quickly saw that the art scene did not represent minorities to the degree he thought it should. So, in 1981, he co-founded Tessri Duniya (meaning “Third World” in Hindi) Theatre and has since become its artistic director.
“Our mandate is to represent minorities in a socially and politically meaningful way that showcases the diversity that is Montreal,” explains Rahul. “Just walking down the street, you recognize that we are in an inter-cultural environment, but we, as minorities, need to do more than just walk on the street. Our cultures need to be expressed through all the literary and artistic means there are because our stories are important. They form the basis of who we are, and there is nothing better than art as a medium to tell these stories.”
