North Vancouver is heralded for its scenic swimming holes, running trails and kayaking routes – but it’s also home to a plethora of fitness studios offering everything from barre classes to personal training to hot yoga and spinning. Hit these North Shore gyms next time you need a break from the outdoors. [Photo courtesy of Barre Fitness]

Don’t let Distrikt’s tongue-in-cheek terminology fool you into thinking you can take it easy here; innovative classes – from Crush Hush to Ugly Sweaters to Strut – will have you sweating (and smiling) from start to finish. Yoga, HIIT, dance-fitness, running, boxing, and more are combined in eight different workouts, which are as tough as they are fun and inspiring.

Vancouver hockey player Trevor Linden’s chain of gyms is surprisingly chic and affordable, making it one of the best fitness centres on the North Shore. Membership starts at just $4 per week, which is less than the price of one latte, and certainly worth it, too, with access to all the latest in cardio and weightlifting equipment and group fitness classes, plus more perks like personal training, nutrition help and extended hours.

Oxygen Yoga & Fitness

Oxygen’s yoga-inspired workouts take place in heated rooms, which means you’ll feel detoxified and rejuvenated while participating in classes that range from 60-minute vinyasa flows, to barre routines, to 30-minute targeted sweat sessions that focus on your butt, arms, legs or abs. Special bootcamp workouts, Zumba, and “Bollywood Burn” classes will add creative flair to your workout routine, as will Oxygen’s upbeat, contemporary music playlists, which you won’t hear in most other Zen-like yoga environments.

Grouse Mountain-The Peak Of Vancouver

6400 Nancy Greene Way, North Vancouver, BC V7R 4K9

Okay, so the Grouse Grind isn’t technically a gym, but I couldn’t leave out this famed North Van workout destination affectionately known as Mother Nature’s stair-master. Starting at the Grouse Mountain parking lot, you’ll step exactly 2,830 stairs to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded by stunning views, and a treat or drink at the touristy but fun resort café. Here, you can also purchase your ticket on the gondola, which takes you on a much smoother ride all the way back to the parking lot, where you’ll begin your climb again (just kidding!).

These iconic hikes – all within driving distance from Vancouver – offer breathtaking views, opportunities for wildlife viewing and groomed trails, making them ideal for tourists looking to experience the very best of West Coast hiking. Lace up your hiking boots (or a sturdy pair of sneakers) and start exploring!
Affordable, fun and a great workout, cycling is an ideal method for seeing the sights of Vancouver, where state-of-the-art bike paths and spectacular Seawall views abound. And for those who don’t own a bike – or who couldn’t fit one in their suitcase – these rental shops loan out two-wheelers that are well oiled, affordable and ready for your next adventure. Vancouver’s close proximity to lake and ocean – and its many public pools – make the city an ideal destination for trying out watersports with your little ones as they grow. So grab the sunscreen, pack the water shoes and swim trunks, and encourage your kids to learn valuable skills in and out of the water at some of Vancouver’s top aquatic camps this summer.
