North Vancouver is heralded for its scenic swimming holes, running trails and kayaking routes – but it’s also home to a plethora of fitness studios offering everything from barre classes to personal training to hot yoga and spinning. For a long, toned and lean ballerina’s body, look no further than Barre Fitness, where dance-inspired workout classes are designed to increase your flexibility, balance, strength, and agility. Owned by former professional dancer Norrie Zaplatynsky, this modern and sleek studio offers a range of classes for all body types and skill levels (no pointe shoes needed) – plus convenient childcare services for parents who want to squeeze in a workout session.
The North Shore’s first-ever personal training facility has provided tailored exercise and nutrition programs to happy clients for more than 15 years and counting. The team’s “non-intimidating and fun” approach to fitness includes a free 60-minute consultation and trial session, followed by regular, easy-going meet-ups with your trainer that suit your budget and fitness goals, all hosted in Body Co’s state-of-the-art facilities.
Don’t let Distrikt’s tongue-in-cheek terminology fool you into thinking you can take it easy here; innovative classes – from Crush Hush to Ugly Sweaters to Strut – will have you sweating (and smiling) from start to finish. Yoga, HIIT, dance-fitness, running, boxing, and more are combined in eight different workouts, which are as tough as they are fun and inspiring.
The international CrossFit craze has crept (or stormed) its way into North Vancouver. This state-of-the-art gym offers traditional CrossFit classes and training programs, plus classes for kids and boot camp sessions. All programs focus on building impeccable body mechanics, consistency, and intensity through age-old exercises such as Olympic lifts, squats, running, rowing and more. Expect to sweat your way through plenty of burpees.
This yoga studio’s North Van location offers as many luxuries and amenities as its stylish counterparts across the water, including classes in yoga, Pilates, core, and indoor cycling; an infrared sauna; showers; a mat and towel service; a tea lounge; and a boutique with snacks, clothing, mats and other accessories. There’s so much to enjoy that you might consider spending the entire afternoon here!
Vancouver hockey player Trevor Linden’s chain of gyms is surprisingly chic and affordable, making it one of the best fitness centres on the North Shore. Membership starts at just $4 per week, which is less than the price of one latte, and certainly worth it, too, with access to all the latest in cardio and weightlifting equipment and group fitness classes, plus more perks like personal training, nutrition help and extended hours.
Oxygen’s yoga-inspired workouts take place in heated rooms, which means you’ll feel detoxified and rejuvenated while participating in classes that range from 60-minute vinyasa flows, to barre routines, to 30-minute targeted sweat sessions that focus on your butt, arms, legs or abs. Special bootcamp workouts, Zumba, and “Bollywood Burn” classes will add creative flair to your workout routine, as will Oxygen’s upbeat, contemporary music playlists, which you won’t hear in most other Zen-like yoga environments.
Okay, so the Grouse Grind isn’t technically a gym, but I couldn’t leave out this famed North Van workout destination affectionately known as Mother Nature’s stair-master. Starting at the Grouse Mountain parking lot, you’ll step exactly 2,830 stairs to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded by stunning views, and a treat or drink at the touristy but fun resort café. Here, you can also purchase your ticket on the gondola, which takes you on a much smoother ride all the way back to the parking lot, where you’ll begin your climb again (just kidding!).
