One of the most festive Calgary events of the summer, Marda Gras is a New Orleans-themed street festival that runs August 13, 2017, in the heart of the Marda Loop community. Since Marda Loop is one of the best dining communities in the city, make sure to stop in to one of these eateries while you’re in the area.
If you’ve worked up a sizable appetite walking around Marda Gras, head to Boogie’s Burgers to enjoy some of the city’s best gut-busting comfort food. Boogie’s specializes in colossal burgers stuffed full of toppings, sauces and unexpected signature ingredients. For those feeling particularly daring, Doug’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper” Burger is a behemoth creation that includes four beef patties, four slices of bacon, a wiener, a mini corn dog and everything but the kitchen sink. Split it amongst a few people and make sure to order a milkshake, too.
The go-to spot for Calgary-crafted ice cream, Village makes small batch artisanal ice cream and has a loyal following of customers. Try the salted caramel or keep things simple with the melted chocolate or Village vanilla bean. It’s the ultimate cool-off snack to enjoy after a hot day in the sun at Marda Gras. Some of Village’s seasonal flavours right now include Grahamtellow, mango, coconut lime coconut milk and a refreshingly light lemon lime sorbet. If you can’t make up your mind, just order a double scoop.
For the party after the party, head to Pips Board Game Café at the end of the day for play time at one of the city’s most buzzed about board game cafes. For $5 per person, you can play as many games you want for as long as you want. Choose from the café’s library of more than 500 different board games and chow down of some food and drinks (yes, alcoholic drinks as well) from Pips’ menu. The pretzel loaf is unbelievably good.
