How to soothe arthritis pain in your feet

October 31, 2015

Arthritis in the feet causes pain and suffering for those who are afflicted with it. Since arthritis involves the cartilage between the bones degenerating, painful swelling and, in some cases, bone spurs can occur.

Fortunately, there are a few ways to help reduce the soreness and soothe arthritis pain suffering. Here are just a few.

How to soothe arthritis pain in your feet

Medication and topical creams

Anti-inflammatory medications are some of the best defences against arthritis pain. Over the counter or prescription anti-inflammatory oral medications reduce inflammation associated with arthritis, thereby reducing pain.

But oral anti-inflammatory medications might not work for some people, since they can cause an upset stomach. If oral medication is out of the question, anti-inflammatory topical creams may work.

These creams, coupled with heat, can provide soothing relief. Rub the cream generously over your feet, put on thick socks, and lay your feet on a heating pad. Along with general relief, this combination may help reduce pain before heading to bed.

The right shoes

If you suffer from arthritic foot pain, your shoes should have certain attributes so that they don't cause you even more pain.

High heels are generally out since they place pressure on the ball of the foot.

However, tennis shoes, flats, and boots should have arch support. This feature is necessary because arch support helps position the foot and toes in a way that doesn't put pressure on the joints.

Your shoes should also be wide enough, so they don't pinch the foot.

Exercise

Although it may feel difficult to get up and move around, especially when arthritis pain shoots through your feet, exercise can help with flexibility.

One simple exercise that can be helpful is simply wiggling your toes a few minutes every hour. Pulling your toes back to stretch them may also reduce arthritic pain.

If you can, exercise your feet through low impact workouts, like walking, swimming or bicycling. However, you should avoid sports like running, tennis, basketball or any exercise that involves a high impact on your feet.

Massage and relaxation

Since the foot has many nerve centres, a foot massage can relieve pain felt in your feet. Make sure your massage therapist knows your feet suffer from arthritis, so he or she will provide relaxing stimulation.

It is also important to relax even if you're not getting a massage. Stress may cause the pain signals going to your brain to increase, while relaxation may help to decrease them.

Relax in a warm bath at night, find a quiet place to read a book, or listen to relaxation tapes. Soothing sounds and images can also help decrease stress and anxiety, leading to a less painful existence.

You don't have to suffer from arthritic foot pain. Try incorporating a few of these ideas into your daily routine and see for yourself just how affective they are.
