Run by the Ricioppo family, who are also behind La Luna Rossa, Azzurri is quickly making a name for itself with its chewy, thin-crust Neapolitan-style pizza made with top-drawer Italian ingredients. The pizza menu is brief (eight regulars plus special features), but even with relatively simple toppings, pizzas like the cinque formaggi and tonna cipolla (yes, that’s with tuna) are bursting with flavour.
Never mind the trendy toppings and deep-dish sloppings that define today’s pizza universe. Sister restaurant to La Luna Rossa, Azzurri Pizzeria on Edmonton Trail opposite Uni Market goes back to the basics with precisely crafted, traditional Napoletana pizza. Baked in a brick oven imported from Naples, pizza such as the margherita and Mediterraneo are served slightly charred. Accompany with a fruit, veg or cheese appetizer and vino.
