We came to this restaurant on our 2nd anniversary. I really feel regret on picking this place to spend our night there. Food is okay but definitely not great. Worst part is the service. There was only one server serving 5-6 tables, and obvious he couldn't handle it. We ordered a bottle of wine but it never get to our table. We reminded the server about 3 times, and at the end, we gave up. I don't think I will ever going back to this restaurant again. This is totally not acceptable.
My husband and I happen to come across this wounderful little italian resto in unionville, we were amazed by the decor. the waiter was very personable and was admirable, he had suggest a cabernet/shiraz to a well with our main entrees, the waiter mentioned that the veal marsala was one of the popular dishes at la grotta, so my husband and I had to order it. The waiter also suggested we try their calamari, and let me tell you it was the best we ever tried in the city, and we always order the calamari where ever we go. the service was great very knowledgeable about the wine list, and great recommandations even the sour cherry cheesecake yummy everything the waiter suggested we ordered ,the food was great, it was a monday evening and i couldnt think of a better place to spend it with my husband will be back soon, good wine and good veal maraslas and the homemade bread was great as well
We had chosen to ignore the negative reviews, as they were outnumbered by the glowing ones. This was a mistake. We were annoyed by flies, and the food was okay, but not great. The tastes were pretty good, but not great, as the chef is obviously using low-quality ingredients, and was very chintzy with key ingredients. We were all disappointed, and will likely not return, as we've had better experiences elsewhere in Unionville. Maybe this place is better for a casual lunch, but I don't recommend it for dinner. This restaurant is not "better than the competition" (as surprisingly suggested by another reviewer) at all. This person must be a friend of the restaurant, or be employed there - we have nothing to do with "the competition" - this is absurd. We are not snobs, have unreasonable expectations or are looking to say negative things. They should read these reviews and change some of the obvious (yet simple) problems they have. If it's buggy out, don't leave the doors open. Be more generous with key ingredients, and use higher quality ones at that.
The restaurant is beautiful. The patio was very charming and relaxing. The food was very good and their homemade bread was very tasty .Service was very professional .We will be back soon for my son's birthday.
I just don't believe the last review I just read!I guess the competition must be suffering.I have tried a lot of restaurants in the Unionville and Markham area and I think La grotta is one of the best ones.It is hard to believe that management would allow flies and bugs to roam around. They have a world class chef and professional staff. Most pastas are homemade and they also have a live band on weekends.Try it out and judge for yourself.I don't think this place should be downgraded the way the previous reviewers have done just because they are better than the competition!!
